Dietary modification is a cornerstone in the management and secondary prevention of cardiac diseases. In Lagos State, where urban lifestyles have led to an increase in the consumption of high-calorie, processed foods, the incidence of cardiovascular conditions is on the rise (Afolabi et al., 2023). Nurses play a critical role in patient education by providing dietary counseling and support that help cardiac patients adopt healthier eating habits. This intervention not only assists in managing existing conditions such as hypertension and dyslipidemia but also reduces the risk of further cardiac events.
Nurses are uniquely positioned to influence dietary behaviors through one-on-one counseling, group sessions, and integration of nutritional advice into routine clinical care. Their ongoing interaction with patients allows them to monitor progress, offer practical tips, and address challenges related to dietary changes. Evidence suggests that when nurses actively engage in dietary interventions, patients are more likely to adhere to recommended modifications, leading to better clinical outcomes and improved quality of life (Ibrahim & Taiwo, 2024).
However, the implementation of dietary modifications by nurses in Lagos State is influenced by several factors, including the availability of resources, patient literacy levels, and cultural food preferences. This study aims to assess the role of nurses in facilitating dietary changes among cardiac patients and determine how these interventions impact patient outcomes. The findings will be instrumental in developing targeted strategies to enhance dietary counseling practices, thereby contributing to improved cardiovascular health in Lagos State.
Cardiac patients in Lagos State face a dual burden of managing their condition while also dealing with a challenging nutritional environment that favors unhealthy eating patterns. Despite the recognized importance of dietary modifications, there is evidence that many patients struggle to implement and sustain these changes. Nurses, as key health educators, are tasked with guiding patients through dietary modifications; however, the effectiveness of their interventions is not well documented. Barriers such as limited time during consultations, varying levels of nutritional knowledge among nurses, and patient resistance due to cultural food practices often compromise the success of these initiatives (Ogunleye & Balogun, 2024).
The gap between recommended dietary practices and actual patient behavior underscores the need to evaluate the role of nurses in this context. This study seeks to determine whether nurse-led dietary interventions result in significant improvements in the nutritional habits of cardiac patients. Additionally, it will explore the challenges that nurses encounter when implementing dietary modifications. Addressing these issues is essential for optimizing patient care, reducing readmission rates, and improving long-term cardiac outcomes in Lagos State.
This study will focus on cardiac patients receiving care in selected hospitals in Lagos State. It will evaluate the role of nurses in dietary counseling and its impact on patient dietary behavior and clinical outcomes. Limitations include potential variability in dietary adherence among patients, differences in counseling methods across institutions, and the influence of external socioeconomic factors on dietary choices.
